Brewing news UK: First profit for Dusanj brothers at Cains Brewery

The Dusanj brothers, the entrepreneurs who rescued the Cains brewery business in Liverpool, have made their first profit at the company after turnover soared last year, The Morning Advertiser posted June 08.

Liverpool brewer Robert Cain made a profit of £57,000 last year as a turnaround plan saw turnover climb by around 18% from £22m in 2004 to £26.3m in the most recent financial year to 31 August 2005.

The brewer made a loss of £320,095 in 2004, the second year after the Dusanjs bought it. The brewery was closed before being bought by a Danish firm and then by Sudarghara and Ajmail Dusanj who are now joint managing directors.

The brothers have won a reputation for innovation with the production of a raisin beer and a cask lager.

“If you can add value through quality and innovation, then you can grow,” Sudarghara has previously said.

They also spent £250,000 re-opening a long-forgotten natural water well underneath its city-centre brewery.

Currently operating a tied estate of 11 pubs, Cains would like to grow to 100 outlets.
